On a planet of emerald green,
Lie oceans of dense forest;
Within them dwell magical beasts,
Feeding upon the toxins there.
On this planet of emerald green,
There lies a deep, beautiful crater—
The impact site of an Earth-bound rocket,
A tragic error of human contact.
On this planet of emerald green,
The oceans are entirely fresh;
Their salt has drained away into tears—
The tears in the eyes of those forest beasts.
At night, the color shifts to gray,
And then the herald awakens;
His piercing cry cracks the very stones—
But I stuff cotton wool in my ears against the night.
On this planet of emerald green,
There is oxygen for but a few breaths;
I lost my love for breathing long ago—
Whether that is good or bad, I cannot say.
On this planet of emerald green,
A house stands high upon a mountain peak;
And within that house, a light burns bright;
Nearby lies a green pond, fringed with sedge.
And at the bottom lies a small chest,
Secured by four heavy locks;
It is locked from the inside out,
And all the keys were long ago drunk away.
Oh, if only I could find the keys!
For within that chest lies the planet's salvation;
I have already fallen in love with this world, and there is no turning back now.
On this planet of emerald green,
You may do whatever your heart desires;
And so, awaiting the warmth of summer,
We huddle together to welcome the autumn.
